When Your Dog’s Behaviour Starts Controlling Your Life

You've stopped walking at normal times, because it's easier than the alternative. You cross the road when you see another dog. You've got a route that avoids the park. Visitors get warned before they come round, or they don't come round at all. At home your dog can't switch off. They're up at every noise, pacing, unable to settle, and you can feel the tension in the house. And underneath all of it there's the worry about what happens if it gets worse.

It isn't only the dog. It's what living around the dog has done to everything else. Walks stopped being the good part of your day. You've turned down invitations because it's not worth the hassle of sorting cover. You've had the conversation with your partner about whether you can keep doing this. And there's the guilt. Because you love them, and you can see they're not happy either, and you don't know how to fix it. Left alone this rarely improves on its own. Dogs get more practised at the behaviour, owners get more careful about avoiding it, and the world gets smaller for both of you.

A dog you actually understand

We start by working out what’s actually driving the behaviour, rather than guessing at it. That’s the part most owners have never had done properly, and it’s the part everything else depends on.

From there we build the foundations. Calmness, engagement, focus. The early wins that give you something to stand on.

Then we take it into real life, into the situations that have been going wrong, at a pace your dog can actually cope with.

Throughout it you get a plan built around your dog rather than a template, short practical exercises that fit a normal week, and support between sessions so you’re never stuck waiting for the next one to ask a question.

By the end the aim is that you can read your dog, respond confidently, and keep making progress without me.

The questions people ask

Will this work for my dog?

I won't know until we've talked, and I won't pretend otherwise. Some dogs need veterinary input alongside behaviour work, and if that's yours I'll tell you on the call. What I can say is that the approach starts with your individual dog rather than a fixed method, so it doesn't depend on your dog fitting a mould.

I haven't got time for something like this.

The sessions are spaced out rather than stacked together, and the work between them is short practical exercises built to fit around a normal week. Most owners find it takes less time than the managing and avoiding they were already doing.

I've had a trainer before and it didn't stick.

That's common, and it's usually because the work stopped at the symptom. If you only ever learn what to do when it happens, you're back to square one when something new comes along. Understanding why it's happening is what makes it stick.

We'll go through that on the call, once I understand what your dog actually needs. There's more than one way to work together and I'd rather point you at the right one than quote you for something that isn't.

Jack helped us with both our dogs but more so Rusty with his general behaviour and also his barking at other dogs when we were out walking. Since working with Jack he is like a different dog. We’ve stopped him from barking and he will happily walk in places where there are other dogs. It is now enjoyable to take him to different places. We called Jack after our rescue dog sparky decided after 2 years he was going to attack his big brother Oakley, this was over food and the ring of the door bell. This caused us so much stress and worry as some of the incidents had been so traumatic for us, and we also had a small child to think about. My rescue springer can be a strong puller whilst on the lead, but with Jack's guidance (and patience!), I have got to the stage where I can take Elwood out for a walk and the lead is loose! When we started, Suki lacked confidence, was easily frustrated, and was more focused on distractions than on me during walks. After just five 1-1 training sessions with Jack, where I was taught several tips and techniques to encourage good behaviour, she’s transformed. She now loves running free, plays confidently with other dogs, and listens to me much better. She even understands when I ask her to calm down after a run!
